Sauna Cautions & Contraindications
The following conditions are considered contraindications for sauna use. If you have any concerns about your health or safety, please consult with your doctor before booking a sauna session. If you have any of the below conditions, you must obtain a note of authorisation from your doctor prior to using the sauna.
-
Diuretics, barbiturates, blood thinners, and beta-blockers: These may impair the body’s natural heat loss mechanisms.
Anticholinergics (e.g., Amitriptyline): These may inhibit sweating and increase the risk of heat rash or heat stroke.
Over-the-counter medications (e.g., antihistamines): These may increase the likelihood of heat stroke.
-
Sauna use is not permitted during pregnancy to ensure your safety and the safety of your baby.
-
Sauna is contraindicated in most cardiovascular conditions, such as hypertension, congestive heart failure, and impaired coronary circulation. Prolonged heat exposure may increase cardiac output and blood flow, which can strain the heart.
If you have a pacemaker, consult with your doctor before using the sauna.
-
Intoxication or heavy alcohol intake, either before or during sauna use, may cause negative reactions, including increased heart rate.
If you appear intoxicated, your session will be cancelled without refund.
-
Conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, central nervous system tumours, and diabetes with neuropathy may impair the ability to sweat, increasing the risk of overheating.
If you have a bleeding disorder or a predisposition to bleeding, sauna use should be avoided.
-
If you are experiencing a fever or acute illness, do not use the sauna until your fever and/or illness has subsided.
-
Avoid sauna use within the first 48 hours following an acute joint injury or until the swelling subsides. Chronic inflammation or swelling may not respond well to heat.
